Every great spiritual leader has a guide who shapes their journey. For Neville Goddard (1905–1972), that guide was Abdullah, a brilliant Jewish rabbi from Ethiopia. Known today as Abdullah Neville Goddard’s Teacher, he mentored Neville for five years and profoundly influenced his understanding of imagination, manifestation, and esoteric Christianity. Much of the credit for Neville’s spiritual evolution belongs to Abdullah, who instilled in him the confidence and discipline to live “as though it were already done.”
Abdullah was a man of deep compassion and an unshakable sense of purpose. A proud Ethiopian mystic and scholar, he combined his cultural heritage with an open, straightforward teaching style. His method of communication was both direct and charismatic, which mirrored Neville’s own later approach to teaching.
As an old soul and a gifted spiritual philosopher, Abdullah attracted people from all walks of life. He became known for making the hidden wisdom of scripture understandable and practical, lifting the veil of mystery so people could see the spiritual power within their everyday lives.
Neville frequently mentioned Abdullah in his lectures. Their first meeting was unforgettable. In 1931, Neville walked into a room where Abdullah was speaking. After the lecture, Abdullah approached him and said, “Neville, you are six months late.” Astonished, Neville asked how Abdullah knew him. Abdullah replied, “The brothers told me you were coming.”
From that moment, Neville began to study under Abdullah, receiving guidance on faith, imagination, and the Law of Assumption. This mentorship helped Neville internalize one of Abdullah’s most important teachings: “Live as though you are already there.”
Abdullah taught Neville that belief in an imagined reality must be unwavering. You must accept your imagined desire as already fulfilled, without a trace of doubt. Belief, faith, and persistence were the cornerstones of his teaching.
Through Abdullah’s guidance, Neville came to understand that you manifest what you feel and believe to be true. By embodying this principle, Neville developed the ability to teach others how to shape their reality through the power of imagination.
Their relationship extended beyond formal lectures. Abdullah and Neville shared meaningful life experiences, including attending Neville’s first opera together on Good Friday. These personal moments allowed Neville to observe Abdullah’s teachings in practice, deepening his own understanding.
Abdullah emphasized that human beings are clothed in form but remain limitless creators. He encouraged Neville to stop worrying about how something would happen and instead focus on being the person who already has what they want.
Much of what we know about Abdullah comes from Neville’s lectures and the accounts of other spiritual leaders such as Joseph Murphy. Abdullah left few written records, but his influence is undeniable. His teachings continue to inspire students of manifestation and the Law of Assumption around the world.
If you want to explore Abdullah’s influence further, listen to Neville Goddard’s recorded lectures. Many of these audios include direct references to conversations with Abdullah, giving you firsthand insight into the mentorship that shaped Neville’s philosophy.
