Is Imagination Creates Reality A Viable Concept?

Contrary to what you may have heard, the idea that imagination creates reality is not magic or superstition. It’s not a ritual, spell, or cult practice. The Law of Assumption is already at work in your life right now.

When you consciously direct your imagination, you begin to influence your outer world. By imagining your desired outcome and feeling it as real, you set in motion the circumstances that bring it into your experience.

Neville Goddard taught that everything in your life begins with an inner assumption. Your beliefs and mental images form the blueprint for your reality. When you understand and apply this principle, you can transform your life, achieve your goals, and create the experiences you truly want.

Understanding that Imagination Creates Reality

The most basic definition of the Law of Assumption is that whatever you focus on and believe to be true within yourself will be experienced in your outer world.

Your imagination, attention, focus, and energy determine what is impressed upon your subconscious. When you imagine vividly and combine it with strong feeling, you create powerful subconscious impressions. Whether you do this intentionally or not, the Law is always operating. By learning to transform your thoughts, you can change what you experience in your life.

Everything in the universe is a manifestation of what was first imagined. The entire universe is an out-picturing of imagination. Vibrations in matter naturally attract and resonate with similar vibrations in other objects. All of this begins with the initial act of imagination.

Everything Was First Imagined

To really grasp this concept, try a quick experiment. Right now, look around your surroundings and notice what you see. For example, I see my smartphone on the desk, the TV on the wall, and a pair of sneakers on the floor. As I continue to observe these random objects, I realize they all have one thing in common.

They were all first imagined by someone. Someone had to envision the design of my smartphone before it was built. The concept for my sneakers began as an idea in a designer’s mind before it was sketched out on paper. The TV on the wall started as an inspired imaginal act in someone’s mind at an R&D office. In fact, nothing material in this world existed without first being imagined. Whatever you notice in your surroundings shares the same origin – it was first imagined. I challenge you to disprove it!

When you realize that imagination is the source of everything objective in your world, you also realize how much power you have to shape outcomes. Imagination creates not only objects but circumstances, too. The key is to deliberately direct your imaginal acts in alignment with your desires. Any imaginal activity that conflicts with your goal can be reversed and reshaped. Nothing happens to you – it happens through you.

How Does the Law of Assumption Work?

The principles of the Law of Assumption can be explained in many ways. If you observe how the mind operates, you’ll see clear connections to its central idea — your assumptions become your truth. Whatever you assume to be true, even if it seems impossible, will harden into fact if you persist. “Imagination Creates Your Reality” and the Law of Assumption are the pillars of Neville Goddard’s teachings.

Consider this quote from Neville Goddard:

“Daring to assume that all things are possible to imagine, put this one reality to the extreme test by assuming you are the person you would like to be. Your reasonable mind and outer senses may deny it; but I promise you: if you will persist, you will receive your assumption. Believe me, you are the same God who created and sustains the universe, but are keyed low; so you must be persistent if you would bring about a change.”

By managing your imagination and assumptions, you manage your destiny. The subconscious is non-selective; it accepts whatever you feed it. If you are filled with negative assumptions, you will experience negative results. Good or bad, whatever dominates your imaginal activity will manifest in your life.

Persist In Your Assumptions.

Through practice and patience, you can learn to create mental images of your own choosing. By observing, monitoring, and filtering the thoughts you allow into your mind, you can control your assumptions and, in turn, your experiences.

For example, imagine waking up in the morning and deciding to assume that you are happily employed, even if you are not at that moment. Throughout the day, you focus your thoughts and feelings on already having the job you desire. Regardless of what you experience to the contrary, you persist in this assumption that you are already employed. All your thoughts and imaginings align with your new assumption. Then, before sleeping at night, you quietly give thanks in prayer for having this wonderful job.

Days or weeks may pass, but if you persist in this new habit, the Law of Assumption states that your sustained mindset will harden into reality.

Because your mind is focused on what you have, you begin to filter the world and everyone in it in a specific way. You start to see people, places, and circumstances as opportunities to support your assumption. Your brain acts as a filter for your consciousness, looking at everything it sees and hears and saying, “Since we’re focused on this important mission, let’s find what’s relevant and send that to the conscious mind.”

This filtering leads you to a bridge of incidents that help your goals materialize. You meet the right people, discover new opportunities, and take inspired actions that bring your desire into reality. You manifest your goal with your mind.

You can manifest what you want because you are training your mind to pay attention, focus, and perceive from a specific assumption or “state of consciousness.” As you continually imagine from this assumption, other people naturally align with it and are compelled to help you.

This shows that the Law of Consciousness is not magic. “Imagination Creates Reality” simply means tuning your emotions and thinking to your positive desire. It’s about teaching your mind to notice the things that will help you achieve your goals, directing your imaginal activity, and intentionally setting a purpose for each day. By applying these principles, you can guide your life and use your imagination to realize whatever you want in this world.

Michael Sutherland

Michael Sutherland is the founder of TrueCosmic and a devoted student and practitioner of Neville Goddard teachings. His path to this work was not academic — it was forged in crisis. Raised as a devout Jehovah Witness and Baptist, Michael walked away from the church at eighteen and spent the next 25 years in what scripture calls the far country — the prodigal son, wandering. He built a life by the world rules, searching without knowing what he was searching for. When the biggest crisis of his life arrived, he turned back — not to the church, but to scripture itself. Through Neville Goddard teachings he found what the church had never shown him: that the God of scripture is not an external being to be feared and appeased. God is your own awareness. Your own consciousness. Your own imagination. The I AM within. What he discovered was not a set of Neville Goddard principles — these are cosmic laws, written about not only in the Bible but across every ancient spiritual tradition the world over. The same truth, expressed in different language, in every age. The law of consciousness operates whether we are aware of it or not. We are manifesting constantly — the wanted and the unwanted alike. Understanding how this law works allows us to work with it consciously and intentionally, directing it toward the experiences we actually desire rather than the ones our unexamined assumptions are silently producing. In 2017, guided by two mentors — Dr Bruno R Cignacco and Roupa Jetto, a hypnotherapist and Buddhist practitioner — Michael had his first transcendent experience during deep meditation. In 2018 came something he could never have sought or engineered: what is described across traditions as a Kundalini awakening. A sound like rushing wind in both ears. An electrical current rising from the base of the spine, so intense it seemed impossible to survive. Every experience that followed — out of body states, movement along the spinal cord, sensations inside the skull — was documented in scripture, passage by passage, hidden in plain sight. This is not something that can be earned or manufactured. It is grace. According to scripture, it is every soul birthright — every one of us will experience this unfolding, in this lifetime or another. Michael does not share this to define himself above anyone else. He shares it because it confirmed, beyond any doubt, that what Neville Goddard taught is true — and because that confirmation is the foundation on which TrueCosmic was built. TrueCosmic today is home to the most comprehensive Neville Goddard library available online — 292 lectures — alongside an academy of courses, masterclasses and workshops, and 13 specialist coaches serving students across every continent. At its heart is a global community of over 92,000 members, all discovering what happens when you begin to work consciously with the law that was always operating anyway. The invitation is simple: become aware of the law. Understand how it works. And begin, deliberately, to use it.
