Neville Goddard Glossary: 100+ Terms Defined

This is the most comprehensive glossary of Neville Goddard terms, Law of Assumption concepts, and consciousness teachings available online. Every definition reflects TrueCosmic’s position that the law of assumption is a practice — not a trick — and that consciousness is the only reality. These are not abstract ideas. They are the operating principles of creation itself.

A

Acceptance

The state of receiving a desire as already fulfilled in consciousness. Acceptance is not passive resignation — it is the active inner knowing that what you have assumed is already real in the only place that matters: within. Without acceptance, assumption remains intellectual rather than felt.

Assumption

The deliberate act of claiming a state in consciousness as if it were already true. Neville Goddard taught that an assumption, if persisted in, will harden into fact. This is the cornerstone of the Law of Assumption. An assumption is not wishful thinking — it is a conscious choice of state.

Awakening

The experiential realisation that you are God — that your consciousness is the creative power behind all reality. Neville distinguished between the law (manifesting desires) and the promise (full spiritual awakening, the birth of Christ within). Awakening is not earned or achieved — it is revealed by grace. At TrueCosmic, awakening is understood through both Neville’s promise and direct Kundalini experience.

B

Believe

To accept as real in consciousness. Belief in Neville’s framework is not intellectual assent but felt conviction. “Believe that you have received it and you shall have it” (Mark 11:24) — the believing precedes the evidence, not the other way around.

Bible (Esoteric Interpretation)

The Bible, rightly understood, is not a historical account but a psychological drama taking place entirely within human consciousness. Every character, event, and location is a symbol of an inner state. Abraham is faith. Egypt is limitation. The Promised Land is the fulfilled state. Israel is the highest state of consciousness — not a place, not a people, but a level of being.

Body of Love

Neville’s description of the resurrected spiritual body — the body of imagination, as opposed to the body of flesh. After awakening, one operates increasingly from this body of love, which is the body of Christ, the body of the risen self.

C

Christ

In Neville’s teachings, Christ is not an historical figure but the divine imagination within every human being. Christ is your own wonderful human imagination. “I am the way, the truth, and the life” — this “I am” is the Christ speaking from within you, not from without.

Consciousness

The only reality. All that you experience as external — people, circumstances, events — is a projection of your own consciousness. You do not live in a world that happens to you. You live in a world that proceeds from you. This is the oldest truth in existence, documented across Vedic texts, Hermeticism, Kabbalah, Sufism, and the Gospel of Thomas. Neville is TrueCosmic’s primary modern lens on this eternal principle.

Creative Power

The innate ability of consciousness to shape reality through assumption and imagination. Your creative power is not something you acquire — it is what you are. The question is never whether you have it. The question is whether you are using it deliberately or unconsciously.

D

Dead (Spiritually)

In Neville’s framework, to be spiritually dead is to be unaware of your divine nature — to believe that you are at the mercy of external circumstances rather than the creator of your experience. The “resurrection” is the awakening of consciousness to its own creative power.

Desire

Neville taught that desire is God’s gift to you — a signal that what you desire is already yours in a higher dimension of reality. Desire is not lack. Desire is the voice of the fulfilled state calling you toward it. The function of practice is to close the gap between the desire and its felt realisation in consciousness.

Dwelling in the End

The practice of living from the fulfilled state rather than toward it. Rather than rehearsing the journey to your desire, you mentally inhabit the state as if already arrived. “Live in the end” is one of Neville’s most repeated instructions. It is the difference between hoping and having.

E

Esau

In TrueCosmic’s esoteric Bible interpretation, Esau represents the outer man — the one governed by the senses, by what is seen and felt in the physical world. Esau is the firstborn, meaning our default state is to believe what the senses report. Jacob supplants Esau — imagination supplants sense-reality. This is the entire story of conscious creation encoded in scripture.

End Result

The final, fulfilled state of a desire — used as the basis for SATS and visualisation practice. Rather than imagining the process of achieving something, Neville instructed practitioners to imagine the end result: the feeling of the wish fulfilled. The subconscious works backward from the end to find the means.

F

Faith

Neville defined faith as “the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1) — not religious belief but the felt certainty of something invisible. Faith is the inner knowing that precedes outer evidence. It is the state of consciousness that makes manifestation inevitable.

Far Country

From the Parable of the Prodigal Son — the state of separation from your true nature. To be in the far country is to believe you are separate from God, separate from creative power, subject to external forces. The prodigal son’s return is the moment consciousness turns inward and reclaims its divine identity.

Feeling

The secret of manifestation. Neville taught that feeling is the language of the subconscious mind. A vivid mental image without feeling is intellectual. A felt state — even briefly — begins to impress the subconscious. “Feel the reality of your desire” is the practical core of all Law of Assumption work.

First Cause

Consciousness. Everything that exists in the external world had its origin in a state of consciousness. There is no external first cause — no luck, no fate, no circumstance that was not preceded by a corresponding inner state. To know this is to take full responsibility for your experience.

G

God

Your own I AM — the awareness of being. Not an external deity, not a judge, not a benefactor who grants or withholds. God is the subject, not the object. When you say “I am,” you are speaking the name of God. This is the central revelation of Neville Goddard and the liberation at the heart of TrueCosmic’s teaching.

Gratitude

The feeling state of having already received. Genuine gratitude for something not yet physically manifest is one of the most powerful states you can enter — it signals to the subconscious that the desire is real and already fulfilled. Gratitude is not a technique; it is a state of being.

H

Harvest

The physical manifestation of a previously planted seed of consciousness. Neville used agricultural metaphors extensively: you plant in consciousness (assumption), you water with feeling and persistence, and you reap in the physical world. The harvest is not in your control — the planting is.

Human Imagination

Neville’s term for the divine creative faculty within every person. Not daydreaming — not fantasy — but the directed, deliberate use of inner vision to impress states upon the subconscious. “Man’s imagination is the gateway to the Kingdom of God.” Human imagination is God in action.

I

I AM

The name of God (Exodus 3:14 — “I AM THAT I AM”). The pure awareness of being, prior to all conditions. Whatever you attach to “I am” becomes your experienced reality. “I am healthy,” “I am successful,” “I am loved” — these are not affirmations. They are declarations of state that the subconscious accepts and manifests. Most people use “I am” unconsciously and destructively: “I am tired,” “I am broke,” “I am unlucky.”

Imagination

See Human Imagination. In Neville’s system, imagination is not a lesser faculty than reason — it is the primary creative force of the universe. “Imagination is the beginning of creation. You imagine what you desire, and then you believe it to be true.” — Neville Goddard.

Imaginal Act

A deliberate scene or event created in imagination, intended to impress the subconscious with a desired state. The imaginal act is the seed. Once planted with feeling and belief, it will manifest — through paths the conscious mind cannot predict. Trying to control those paths is the most common manifestation mistake.

Inner Conversations

The continuous internal dialogue that shapes your subconscious assumptions. Most people hold inner conversations that confirm limitation, lack, and fear. Neville taught that changing your inner conversations — speaking to yourself and about yourself as the person you wish to be — is one of the most direct ways to shift your state of consciousness.

Israel

The highest state of consciousness — the state where one has fully awakened to their divine nature. Israel is not a nation; it is a level of being. “He who rules as God” — that is the meaning of Israel. It is the state Neville called the Promise: the full awakening that comes after years of working with the law. It is revealed, not achieved.

J

Jacob

The inner man — imagination — who supplants Esau (the outer, sense-driven man). Jacob’s story is the story of consciousness learning to trust imagination over sense evidence. When Jacob becomes Israel, the transformation is complete: imagination has fully taken its rightful throne over external reality.

Jesus

In Neville’s esoteric reading, Jesus is not solely a historical figure but a symbol of the fully awakened human being — the one who has realised “I and the Father are one.” The life of Jesus as told in the Gospels is a psychological drama that every human being will eventually live through, in consciousness.

K

Kingdom of Heaven

“The Kingdom of Heaven is within you” (Luke 17:21). In Neville’s teaching, the Kingdom of Heaven is not a place you go after death — it is a state of consciousness available now. It is the state where imagination rules, where assumption creates reality, where the inner and outer are known to be one.

Kundalini

The latent spiritual energy described in Vedic and Tantric traditions as coiled at the base of the spine. When awakened — through sustained meditation, grace, or spiritual practice — it rises through the chakras, producing profound experiences of light, sound, and expanded consciousness. Neville’s own awakening experience, described in his lecture “The Revelation of John,” is consistent with a full Kundalini awakening. At TrueCosmic, the founder Michael Sutherland underwent a full Kundalini awakening in 2018 following years of SATS practice and deep meditation work with his mentor Roupa Jetto.

L

The Law

The Law of Assumption — the principle that consciousness creates reality through assumption and imagination. Neville distinguished between the Law (the practical application of conscious creation) and the Promise (the full spiritual awakening). Most teachings focus only on the Law. TrueCosmic teaches both — but emphasises that the Law is a practice, not a technique. Those who treat it as a shortcut rarely sustain results. Those who commit to it as a way of life transform everything.

Law of Assumption

Neville Goddard’s central teaching: whatever you assume to be true — if persisted in — will become your experienced reality. The law operates on consciousness, not on effort or circumstance. It is not positive thinking. It is a precise understanding of how reality is created: from the inside out, from assumption to manifestation, from inner state to outer event.

Law of Attraction vs Law of Assumption

The Law of Attraction (popularised by The Secret) teaches that like attracts like — that positive thoughts attract positive outcomes. The Law of Assumption goes deeper: you do not attract what you think about; you manifest what you assume to be true about yourself and your world. Assumption is a state of being, not a direction of thought. This is why the Law of Assumption produces more consistent results for serious practitioners.

Living From vs Living Toward

One of the most important distinctions in Neville’s teaching. Living toward a desire keeps it in the future — always approaching, never arriving. Living from a desire means inhabiting the state as if it is already real. The shift from “toward” to “from” is the shift from hoping to having. SATS is the primary practice for making this shift.

M

Manifestation

The physical appearance of something previously assumed in consciousness. Manifestation is not magic — it is the natural result of a held state of consciousness. The seed becomes the plant. The inner becomes the outer. TrueCosmic’s position: manifestation is inevitable when the assumption is sustained. The question is never “will it manifest?” but “am I truly dwelling in the state?”

Micromanagement (Manifestation Mistake)

The most common error in manifestation practice: deciding not only what you want, but exactly how it must arrive. The subconscious mind has access to infinite pathways. When you restrict it to one route — “it must come through this person,” “it must happen by this date,” “it must look like this” — you block the very intelligence working on your behalf. Assume the end. Release the means. This is one of TrueCosmic’s core teachings.

Moses

In Neville’s esoteric reading, Moses represents the law — the understanding of consciousness as creator. Moses leads the children of Israel (humanity) out of Egypt (limitation) but cannot himself enter the Promised Land. The law takes you to the threshold. The Promise — the full awakening — is what carries you across.

N

Neville Goddard (1905–1972)

Barbadian-American mystic, author, and lecturer who taught in New York and Los Angeles from the 1930s to his death in 1972. Neville taught that human imagination is God — that consciousness is the only reality, and that by assuming the feeling of the wish fulfilled, any desire can be manifested. His key works include The Power of Awareness, Feeling is the Secret, Awakened Imagination, and The Law and the Promise. At TrueCosmic, Neville is the primary modern lens on a truth found across all ancient traditions.

New Birth

Neville’s term for the spiritual awakening — being “born again” not in a religious sense but in the sense of awakening to one’s divine nature. The new birth is an actual inner experience: a series of visions and revelations described in scripture as the birth of Christ. Neville described it as the most important event in a human life — more important than any external achievement.

O

Operant Power

Neville’s phrase for the one who actively uses imagination and assumption rather than allowing life to happen by default. “Only the operant power can use the law.” You are always using consciousness — the question is whether you are the operant power or the passive recipient. TrueCosmic’s entire mission is to help people become the operant power in their own lives.

P

Persistence

The sustained dwelling in an assumed state despite contrary evidence. Persistence is what separates occasional manifestors from those who live the law. Neville was clear: an assumption, if persisted in, will harden into fact. The law is not instant. It is consistent. A pianist does not play one note and call it a concert.

The Promise

Neville’s term for the full spiritual awakening — the series of mystical experiences (new birth, discovery of David, ascent into heaven, descent of the Holy Spirit as a dove) that mark the fulfilment of God’s promise to humanity. The Promise is not achieved by technique — it comes by grace, in God’s timing. The Law is what you do. The Promise is what God does in you.

Pruning

Neville’s term for the stripping away of false beliefs, unhealthy relationships, and ego structures that accompanies genuine spiritual growth. Pruning often feels like loss — friendships dissolving, structures crumbling — but is actually a clearing of space for the true self to emerge. Those going through pruning often mistake it for failure. It is preparation.

R

Revision

One of Neville’s most powerful techniques: mentally revisiting a past event and rewriting it as you wished it had happened. Revision operates on the principle that time is not fixed — that a change in consciousness changes the past as well as the future. By revising a painful memory or a failed interaction, you remove its negative creative charge and replace it with a new assumption.

S

SATS (State Akin to Sleep)

Neville Goddard’s most widely taught meditation technique. The state akin to sleep is the hypnagogic state — the threshold between waking and sleeping, where the conscious mind relaxes and the subconscious becomes directly accessible. In this state, a brief imaginal scene of the wish fulfilled is impressed directly onto the subconscious without the resistance of the critical factor. SATS is the primary practice taught at TrueCosmic. Michael Sutherland’s own Kundalini awakening in 2018 followed approximately six months of nightly SATS practice.

Scene (Imaginal Scene)

The specific mental event used in SATS or visualisation practice — a short, sensory-rich moment that implies the wish fulfilled. A scene is not a movie of how things will happen. It is a single moment: a handshake, a phone call received, a reflection in a mirror. Short, felt, and repeated until the state is naturalised.

Seed

Neville’s metaphor for an imaginal act planted in consciousness. Like a physical seed, a seed of consciousness has its own intelligence — it knows how to grow, what path to take, what conditions to create. Your job is to plant it and trust it. Digging it up constantly to check whether it is growing is precisely what prevents it from growing.

Self-Concept

Your deepest assumptions about who and what you are. Your self-concept is the most important creative force in your life — more important than any individual desire. Every manifestation is consistent with your self-concept. This is why two people can use the same technique with entirely different results. Changing your self-concept changes everything.

Serpent

In Neville’s esoteric reading, the serpent of Genesis is not evil — it is the symbol of wisdom and the rising Kundalini energy. “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up” (John 3:14). The serpent that is lifted up is consciousness ascending to its divine nature.

Sleep

Neville regarded the moments before sleep as sacred — the most powerful time for impressing the subconscious. The thoughts and feelings you hold as you fall asleep are received by the subconscious as instructions. This is the basis of SATS. “Never go to sleep feeling that your desire is not yet fulfilled.”

State

A combination of beliefs, feelings, and assumptions held by consciousness at any given moment. You do not attract from what you want — you attract from what you are being. A state is not a thought; it is an orientation of consciousness. All change begins with a change of state.

State of the Wish Fulfilled

The specific state of consciousness in which the desired outcome is felt as already real. This is the target state in all Law of Assumption practice. It is not thinking about the desire — it is being the version of yourself for whom the desire is already a fact.

Subconscious Mind

The creative medium that receives assumptions from the conscious mind and manifests them as physical reality. The subconscious does not reason, judge, or discriminate — it accepts and executes. It cannot tell the difference between a vividly imagined event and a physically lived one. This is the mechanism through which imagination becomes reality.

T

Third Eye

The inner eye of imagination and spiritual perception — associated in Vedic and mystical traditions with the pineal gland and the faculty of inner vision. When Neville spoke of seeing with the imagination rather than the physical eyes, he was describing third eye perception. Activation of the third eye is often associated with the early stages of Kundalini awakening.

Time

In Neville’s cosmology, time is not fixed or linear. The past, present, and future exist simultaneously in a higher dimension of consciousness. This is why revision works — a change in consciousness now reaches backward into the past and forward into the future. “Now” is the only point of creative power.

V

Vibration

Used loosely in some New Age circles to mean emotional frequency. Neville rarely used this term — preferring state, feeling, and assumption. At TrueCosmic, we follow Neville’s more precise framework: you do not raise your vibration; you change your state. State is specific, actionable, and within your direct control in a way that “vibration” is not.

The Void

The state of pure awareness prior to any imaginal content — described in meditation traditions as emptiness, stillness, or the ground of being. Neville occasionally referenced entering the void as a preparatory state for imaginal work. In Kundalini traditions, the void is associated with the dissolution of ego structures before expansion into higher states.

W

Wish Fulfilled

The feeling of having already received what you desire — used as both a target state and a technique. “Feeling is the secret” — Neville taught that the feeling of the wish fulfilled, when genuinely entered and sustained, is sufficient to bring any desire into physical reality. Not hoping it will come. Not picturing it coming. Feeling that it is already here.

The Word

“In the beginning was the Word” (John 1:1). In Neville’s reading, the Word is not spoken language but the inner assumption — the creative decree of consciousness. To “speak the word” is to assume a state so completely that it becomes your reality. The Word is not what you say. It is what you believe.

Y

You (The Real You)

Not the body. Not the name. Not the history. The real you is the awareness behind all experience — the I AM that was before Abraham. This is what every tradition has pointed toward: the Self beyond the self, the consciousness that is both the creator and the creation. Neville’s entire teaching is an invitation to remember what you are.
