At Your Command Neville Goddard: A Complete Guide to His First Book and the Power of Decree

Michael SutherlandAuthor6 Nov 2026 · 10 min read

At Your Command is Neville Goddard’s first book, a brief 1939 work about consciousness, imagination and the true meaning of prayer. The central claim of at your command neville goddard is that a decree takes effect in consciousness: you do not shout your wishes at life, you occupy the state in which the thing desired is already yours. You can read the full text of At Your Command here and follow the argument in Neville’s own words.

Key facts

  • Author: Neville Goddard
  • Year: 1939
  • Publisher: Snellgrove Publications, New York
  • Length: a short book that Neville deliberately kept brief
  • Central idea: consciousness is creative, and what you accept as true within yourself shapes what you experience.

What is At Your Command about?

At Your Command teaches that imagination is not merely a way to picture what you want; Neville presents it as the means by which you enter a new state of being. His argument joins imagination, consciousness, God and prayer in a single spiritual practice: assume inwardly that the desired end is already fulfilled.

In At Your Command, Neville Goddard taught that what you are conscious of being is expressed in your experience. You are always decreeing, whether you know it or not, because you are always conscious of being something.

He is not describing a verbal technique for persuading life to grant a request. The emphasis is on a change in inner identity, from wanting an outcome to experiencing yourself as the one for whom it is already true.

At Your Command, Neville Goddard’s first book, also turns to scripture, and it does so without apology. Neville asks you to stop reading the Bible as an account of events that happened to other people long ago:

“Instead of looking upon the Bible as the historical record of an ancient civilization or the biography of the unusual life of Jesus, see it as a great psychological drama taking place in the consciousness of man.”

That is the key that unlocks the whole book. The stories are wisdom carried in story form, not a historical record, and the literal reading is only the first rung. Once you see the characters as states within your own consciousness, the old outward reading gives way to the inward one, and that realisation is where transformation begins.

How should readers approach at your command neville goddard?

Read At Your Command, Neville Goddard’s original work, as a short, tightly focused teaching rather than as a modern workbook with extensive commentary. Neville says so himself in his foreword: he could have expanded the book into several hundred pages, but chose not to, because commands to be effective must be short and to the point.

The 1939 edition was published by Snellgrove Publications in New York. Its compactness is part of its character: it returns repeatedly to consciousness, the I AM and the inward act of decree instead of offering a long catalogue of techniques.

When an edition includes an introduction, editorial notes or a later essay, distinguish that material from Neville’s original text. A preface can help explain context, but it is not automatically part of the 1939 work, and the difference matters when you are tracing what Neville himself said.

Readers may encounter the book as a digital text, a PDF, an ebook, an audiobook or a set of notes. A written version lets you pause over the wording, while an audio version gives you a spoken reading; notes are a guide to the text, not a replacement for it.

Neville’s teacher Abdullah belongs to the wider story of how his ideas developed. Neville later described studying with Abdullah, a teacher in New York, and connected that instruction with his approach to scripture and imagination; treat these biographical recollections as context, not as additional chapters in At Your Command.

For a broader view of his work across different periods, see this guide to Neville Goddard books. It helps place this early book beside later writings without confusing their different emphases.

What does it mean to decree in consciousness?

In At Your Command, Neville Goddard explains that to decree in consciousness is to accept an inward state as real, rather than to repeat a demand aloud and wait for words to force an outcome. Neville states the principle plainly:

“Decreeing is ever done in consciousness.”

He also warns against mistaking repeated language for inner conviction:

“You do not command things to appear by your words or loud affirmations. Such vain repetition is more often than not confirmation of the opposite.”

Words can help you identify what you are choosing, but the decree itself is not volume, repetition or a formula. In Neville’s teaching, its substance is the inward acceptance of a new condition as present and natural.

His example of a concise biblical command makes the point:

“Commands to be effective must be short and to the point: the greatest command ever recorded is found in the few simple words, ‘And God said, Let there be light.'”

The lesson is not to shout a command at life. It is to settle on the end you desire and let your inner experience reflect that end, rather than continually rehearsing the absence of it. Neville is just as clear about the cost of getting this wrong: “man is always self-imprisoned or self-freed.” The same power that binds you to a limitation is the power that releases you from it.

Who is the I AM in At Your Command?

In At Your Command, Neville Goddard defines the I AM as your awareness of being, the most immediate sense of existence before any particular role, condition or description. He connects that awareness directly to the biblical name of God:

“Moses discovered God to be man’s awareness of being, when he declared these little understood words, ‘I AM hath sent me unto you.'”

Exodus 3:14 gives the name in full: “And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM.” The Psalmist says the same in another way, “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10), and the Jesus of scripture declares, “I and my Father are one” (John 10:30). Neville reads all three as one teaching: the God you have been looking for is the awareness reading these words.

I grew up as a Jehovah’s Witness and later Baptist, and I grew up praying to a figure I imagined somewhere above, looking down and hopefully listening. Hollywood films had fixed that picture for me. What changed it was Neville’s reasoning: if poverty is your affliction, wealth is in effect your saviour; and if imagination is where that outcome begins, then imagination is your saviour.

When you imagine, who is doing the imagining? Your I AM. In that moment the name of God stopped being a distant title and became my own awareness of being, and Neville’s line about Moses gave language to that recognition.

The teaching that kept me afraid was the picture of God as an external authority whose attention I had to earn and whose judgement I had to dread. That fear kept me small for years, and it kept me dependent on a church to stand between me and a God I could never quite reach. Neville removed the intermediary. There was no one to placate, only my own awareness to be faithful to. That is not a rejection of anyone’s sincerity; it is liberation from a teaching that had made me afraid of the very power I was using every day.

How do you practise At Your Command today?

To practise At Your Command, Neville Goddard’s method is simple: choose one clear end and return inwardly to the state in which it is already fulfilled. The book is a practice in changing your assumed state, not a trick for making events obey a shouted command.

  1. Name the end. Choose a specific, meaningful outcome rather than a vague wish to feel better about everything.
  2. Imagine the fulfilled condition. Let a simple experience imply that the outcome is already yours. Keep it brief enough to return to without strain.
  3. Enter it as yourself. Imagine from the first person, not as an observer watching somebody else receive what you want.
  4. Return without force. When doubt or distraction appears, renew the inward experience rather than scolding yourself or multiplying affirmations.
  5. Live from the end. Go about your day as the person for whom this is already done. Let your ordinary decisions be the decisions of that person.

Think of an archer refining the same shot, adjusting stance and breath until the arrow lands without strain. A decree is not a one-off command shouted at life; it is a state you return to until it becomes natural. The Law is a practice, not a trick, and consistency is what separates those who occasionally see results from those who live this teaching.

Neville’s account of this practice turns on assumption, not desire. He teaches that you rise “to the naturalness of being the thing desired”: you do not keep holding the desire at a distance, you occupy the state in which it is already yours.

That is different from suppressing a wish or pretending that present difficulties do not exist. It is a deliberate inward choice about the state you will inhabit, made without arguing with what your senses currently report.

Deciding exactly how a decree must arrive can block the practice because it fixes the route as well as the end. The decree fixes the end, never the route. Your awareness has more pathways open to it than your reasoning mind could ever list, and to dictate the means is to restrict the very intelligence already working on your behalf.

If the outcome is slow to appear, do not turn that into a verdict against yourself or against the Law. Look instead at the application: was the end clear, and did you return to the state, or did you keep checking for evidence? Like the archer, you adjust and shoot again.

What is the difference between assumption and desire?

At Your Command, Neville Goddard’s first book, makes this distinction plain. Desire recognises a condition you want; assumption is the inward experience of that condition as already true. This distinction is the heart of Neville’s method. To desire something is quietly to confess that you lack it, because you cannot desire what you already have. The aim is not to keep wanting from a state of lack, but to rise to the naturalness of being what you desire, so that the wanting falls quiet.

That does not mean manufacturing certainty by force. It means giving attention to the end you chose and returning to it steadily, without making every passing emotion a test of whether you have succeeded.

Readers exploring the larger framework can compare this early teaching with the Law of Assumption. For Neville’s emphasis on inner feeling, read Feeling Is the Secret as a related but separate work.

At Your Command vs Neville’s later books

At Your Command, Neville Goddard’s earliest book, is a concise presentation of Neville’s core teaching. Later books revisit imagination, consciousness and scripture with further explanation and different arrangements, so this first work is a useful starting point rather than a complete account of everything he taught.

Your Faith Is Your Fortune (1941) takes the same seed and shows how it explains scripture chapter by chapter. The Power of Awareness develops the role of awareness and the states of being in more extended form. Read the complete guide to The Power of Awareness to compare its treatment with the compact argument in At Your Command.

Many readers begin with At Your Command for its direct statement of the principle, then explore later works for a fuller development; the guide to Neville Goddard’s life and teaching offers further context.

Conclusion

At your command neville goddard is a short book with a focused teaching: the decree is an inward acceptance, imagination is central to that acceptance, and the I AM names the awareness through which Neville understands God. Its value lies in the practice it describes and in the questions it raises about scripture, prayer and the self.

Read the original text slowly. Choose one end, return to it without strain, and let your days become the evidence of the state you have chosen.

Frequently asked questions

What is Neville Goddard’s 3 day rule?

The phrase is often used online to describe a claim that an imagined outcome should appear within three days, but At Your Command does not set any such deadline. Its central instruction concerns the state you assume, not a timetable for events.

What is the most famous line in At Your Command, Neville Goddard’s first book?

Many readers point to “Decreeing is ever done in consciousness”, because it sums up the whole book in five words.

Is At Your Command available to read online?

Yes. The full text is available on our At Your Command text page. Use the written wording when you want to study Neville’s phrasing closely.

How does At Your Command treat the Jesus of scripture?

Neville reads the Jesus of scripture as a description of awakened consciousness rather than as a biography. Statements such as “I AM the way” are, for him, about the I AM within you, not about a person outside you.

A closing word

Whatever you are facing right now, the way through it is not waiting for you somewhere outside. It is already held within you, together with everything you long to see fulfilled. The power that formed all that exists did not stop short of you; it lives in you and answers to you. You are the one who sets it moving, and once you do, there is no circumstance strong enough to stand in its way. Fear not.
