Your Faith Is Your Fortune: A Complete Guide to Neville Goddard’s 1941 Book

Michael SutherlandAuthor6 Nov 2026 · 11 min read

Your Faith Is Your Fortune is Neville Goddard’s second book, first published in 1941, and it makes one claim that everything else rests on: the God you have been taught to look for outside yourself is your own awareness of being, and your faith in that awareness is the fortune that shapes your life. In twenty-seven short chapters, almost every one opening with a line of scripture, Neville reads the Bible as a psychological drama staged inside you rather than as a record of events that happened to other people long ago.

If you have read At Your Command, this is the book where Neville slows down and shows his working. This guide walks you through what Your Faith Is Your Fortune actually teaches, why its definition of faith is so different from the one most of us grew up with, and how to turn its ideas into a daily practice.

Your Faith Is Your Fortune: an open book and a small mirror catching sunlight by a window

Your Faith Is Your Fortune at a glance

  • Author: Neville Goddard (published simply as “Neville”)
  • First published: 1941, two years after At Your Command
  • Length: a short book of twenty-seven chapters, roughly a hundred pages in most editions
  • Central idea: God is your awareness of being, the I AM, and whatever you are conscious of being, you become
  • Opening motto: “Man’s faith in God is measured by his confidence in himself.”
  • Best for: readers ready to move from technique to understanding why the technique works

What is Your Faith Is Your Fortune about?

Your Faith Is Your Fortune is about identity. Neville argues that every circumstance in your world is an outpicturing of what you are conscious of being, and that changing your world therefore means changing your conception of yourself, not wrestling with the world itself. The book’s opening line puts it with typical economy: “Leave the mirror and change your face.” You do not repaint the reflection. You change the one who is looking.

The second idea follows from the first. If consciousness is the cause, then the God of scripture cannot be a figure seated somewhere beyond the clouds. Neville writes that if man “would give up his belief in a God apart from himself, recognize his awareness of being to be God,” he would “transform his world from a barren waste to a fertile field of his own liking.” Faith, in this reading, is not hope that a distant power will intervene. It is confidence in the power you already are.

That is why the book reads scripture the way it does. Neville is plain that the Bible becomes intelligible only “when man sees the Bible as a great psychological drama, with all of its characters and actors as the personified qualities and attributes of his own consciousness.” The stories are wisdom carried in story form, not a historical record, and the literal reading is the first rung of the ladder rather than the place to stay. As in every Bible story, the elder serves the younger: the outward reading gives way to the inward one, and that realisation is what changes a life.

Why the book’s definition of faith changes everything

I was raised as a Jehovah’s Witness and later in a Baptist church, and faith, as I was taught it, meant belief in something I could not see, held in place by the fear of what would happen if I let it go. Faith was obedience. Faith was waiting. Above all, faith was directed outward, towards a judge whose approval I could never be sure I had earned. When I walked away from the church at eighteen, I thought I was walking away from faith altogether.

Twenty-five years later, in the middle of the worst crisis of my life, I found Neville, and this book turned the word inside out for me. Your Faith Is Your Fortune does not ask you to believe in a power outside yourself. It asks you to have faith in your own awareness, to trust that what you assume yourself to be is already in motion towards you. Neville’s motto, that your faith in God is measured by your confidence in yourself, was not arrogance. It was liberation. The intermediary was gone. There was no one to placate and nothing to fear, only the steady discipline of knowing who I am.

Scripture describes this kind of faith precisely: “For we walk by faith, not by sight” (2 Corinthians 5:7, KJV). Sight is the evidence of the senses. Faith is loyalty to the unseen state you have assumed.

A finished kitchen with a marble worktop, a story of Your Faith Is Your Fortune in practice

When I walked by faith and not by sight

I learned what that verse means during a house renovation that had already devoured every penny we had. Irene wanted a marble worktop for the kitchen, and by any sensible reckoning it was out of the question. So I did what this book teaches. For five nights in a row, I imagined the kitchen finished, and Irene hearing her best friend tell her how beautiful it looked. Then, on a Friday afternoon, I walked into the showroom with the kitchen template and ordered the worktop. It cost over five thousand pounds, and it had to be paid in full within ten days.

I walked into that showroom without a penny in my pocket, yet entirely convinced the worktop was already ours. About four days later my sister who II hadn’t solicited her rang. She said she did not know why, but something was telling her to call and lend me some money: four thousand pounds. I had not asked her, and I had not hinted. Friends covered the rest, and every penny was in place before the marble was fitted. That is what Neville means by faith. Not a hope, not a wish, but a settled assumption that refused to take its orders from my bank balance.

The core teaching: decree in consciousness, not in words

The early chapters, including “Before Abraham Was” and “You Shall Decree”, establish the mechanism. You decree, Neville says, not by announcing what you want but by being conscious of being it. This is where many readers misunderstand the whole of his work. To focus on a desire is to confess that you lack it, for you cannot desire what you already have. The practice is to assume the state in which the thing desired is already yours, and to let that state, not the wanting, become the place you live from.

Neville develops this through a series of questions that run through the middle of the book: “Who Seek Ye?”, “Who Am I?” and “I Am He”. Each one presses the same point from a different angle. Whatever you attach to the words “I am” is what you are calling into your experience. “I am broke,” “I am unlucky in love” and “I am always overlooked” are decrees just as surely as their opposites, and they are obeyed just as faithfully. This is why the chapter “No Other God” matters so much: there is only one power, and you are already using it every moment. The only question is what you are using it for.

If you want to see how this foundation grew into Neville’s later method, read our guide to the Law of Assumption, and compare it with The Power of Awareness, where the same principle is set out with far more practical detail eight years later.

The scripture chapters: the Twenty-Third Psalm as a state of mind

The second half of Your Faith Is Your Fortune works through scripture chapter by chapter, with titles such as “Crucifixion and Resurrection”, “The Twelve Disciples”, “Daniel in the Lions’ Den” and “Twenty-Third Psalm”. Each takes a familiar passage and reads it as a description of consciousness at work.

The Twenty-Third Psalm is the clearest example. “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters” (Psalm 23:1 to 2, KJV). Read as a prayer to an outside protector, it is a comfort. Read as Neville reads it, it is an instruction. The LORD is your own awareness of being, the I AM, and when that awareness is settled in the state you have assumed, it leads and provides. The green pastures and still waters describe what life feels like once you stop straining: effortless supply, not because you have finally pleased someone, but because you have finally rested in who you are. Notice, too, the phrase “I shall not want”. The wanting falls quiet. That is the sign the assumption has taken hold.

Our guide to esoteric Bible interpretation takes this method much further, if the scripture chapters are what draw you to the book.

How to practise Your Faith Is Your Fortune today

Neville never intended this book to be admired on a shelf. It is a manual, and it rewards the reader who uses it. Here is a simple way to begin.

  1. Audit your “I am” statements. For one day, notice every sentence you think or speak that begins with “I am”. Write the persistent ones down. These are your current decrees.
  2. Choose one new conception of yourself. Not a list of wishes, but one statement of identity that, if it were true, would make the outcome you seek natural. “I am someone whose work is valued.” “I am financially at ease.”
  3. Feel it from the inside. In a relaxed, drowsy state, imagine a short scene that would follow naturally if that conception were already true, then rest in the feeling of it. Our guide to the SATS technique shows you exactly how.
  4. Walk by faith, not by sight. During the day, when the evidence of your senses disagrees, decline to argue with it. Return to the assumed state the way you would return to a breath you had briefly forgotten.
  5. Repeat tomorrow. One night is a start. The state becomes yours through return, not through one heroic effort.

Practice, not a trick: the martial artist’s way

Most of what you will find online sells instant results. TrueCosmic teaches practice, because the Law is a practice and not a trick, and Your Faith Is Your Fortune is, in the end, a book about consistency. Think of a martial artist repeating the same strike, thousands of times, long after it has stopped being interesting. Nobody watches those repetitions. Yet when the moment comes, the strike is simply there, clean and automatic, because the body has stopped needing to think about it.

Faith works the same way. The first time you assume a new conception of yourself, it feels like pretending. The tenth time, it feels less strange. Somewhere along the line, without announcement, it becomes the natural way you think about yourself, and that is when the world begins to rearrange itself to match. What separates people who occasionally see results from people who live this teaching is not talent or luck. It is devotion to the repetition.

The biggest mistake readers make with this book

The most common mistake is deciding not only what you want but exactly how it must arrive. When I sat imagining that finished kitchen, I had no idea the money would come through my sister. Had I insisted it must come from a particular contract or a particular client, I would have spent those ten days staring at my inbox and fretting, and I would have closed off the very route that came.

Neville’s teaching is that you fix the end and leave the means alone. Your awareness has more pathways open to it than your reasoning mind could ever list. To micromanage the route is to restrict an intelligence that is already working on your behalf. Assume the end, feel it as done, and let the bridge to it build itself.

Your Faith Is Your Fortune vs Neville’s other books

Where does this book sit in Neville’s work? At Your Command (1939) is the seed: a brief, almost impatient statement that you are God and that you decree in consciousness. Your Faith Is Your Fortune (1941) is the first full flowering, the book where Neville takes that seed and shows how it explains scripture from Genesis to the Gospels. Feeling Is the Secret (1944) narrows the focus to the mechanics of feeling and the drowsy state, and The Power of Awareness (1952) is the mature, practical synthesis.

If you are new to Neville, many students find it helps to read Your Faith Is Your Fortune second, after At Your Command, and before the more technical books. It gives you the why before the how. Our guide to Neville Goddard’s books sets out a full reading order, and you can read Your Faith Is Your Fortune here. Readers’ editions and reviews are also listed on Goodreads.

Who should read Your Faith Is Your Fortune?

This book is for you if you have tried techniques and found that they work sometimes and not at others, and you want to understand why. It is for you if you were raised to fear an external God and have been looking for a way back to scripture that does not require you to shrink. And it is for you if you suspect that the real work is not changing your circumstances but changing the person experiencing them.

It is a demanding book in places, especially in the scripture chapters, where Neville moves quickly and assumes a lot. Read it slowly. Read one chapter, then live with it for a few days before moving on. It was never meant to be raced through.

Frequently asked questions

That God is your own awareness of being, the I AM, and that whatever you are conscious of being is what you experience. Faith is confidence in that awareness rather than hope in an external power.

How many chapters are in Your Faith Is Your Fortune?

Twenty-seven short chapters, almost all of which open with a passage of scripture that Neville then interprets as a description of consciousness.

Should I read Your Faith Is Your Fortune or At Your Command first?

At Your Command is shorter and gives you the core idea in under an hour. Your Faith Is Your Fortune then develops it in depth, so most students read At Your Command first.

A closing word

Whatever you are facing as you read this, the answer you are searching for is not waiting somewhere outside you. It is already folded into your own awareness, along with everything you hope to see fulfilled. The power that brought all things into being did not stop at the edges of the sky. It moves in you, and it waits on your word. You are the one who sets it in motion, and once you do, no situation, however entrenched it looks, can hold its ground against it. Fear not.
