Abdullah the Ethiopian Mystic

Abdullah the Ethiopian mystic

A mythical figure. A prophet. Abdullah the Ethiopian mystic is shrouded in mystery, but where did the mentor of Neville Goddard really come from? Revered by many Kabalists as a seer who shared his knowledge of ancient esoteric teachings. In this article, we play the investigator and sift through the scarce bits of information available to draw together the seeds of the legends that became the man.

If I were called upon to name a man I w of unseen laws governing the universe would consider my teacher, I would name Abdullah. I studied with that gentleman for five years.” Neville Goddard Changing The Feeling Of I Abdullah

A profound mystical teacher, he had a huge impact on Neville Goddard’s spiritual journey. As Neville’s mentor, Abdullah introduced him to esoteric principles that became the foundation of his philosophies. Abdullah’s teachings, rich in mystical traditions and deep spiritual insight, influenced Neville’s understanding of imagination and reality. This mentorship guided Neville to develop his unique perspective on manifesting desires and interpreting biblical texts metaphysically. Abdullah was, without doubt, his biggest influence, and his wisdom and guidance were instrumental in the evolution of Neville’s ideas, leaving a lasting impact on his writings and lectures, which continue to inspire seekers of spiritual truth worldwide.

Esoteric Knowledge

Esoteric Knowledge

Abdullah was a renowned seer and possessed profound esoteric knowledge, making him a master of various mystical traditions. His teachings were a combination of diverse spiritual concepts, including the ancient wisdom of Kabbalah and the profound truths of Christianity. Kabbalah is the spiritual study of the unseen laws governing the universe from the perspective of Judaism. His understanding of Kabbalah provided deep insights into the mystical aspects of Judaism, particularly the nature of creation and the human soul’s journey. His integration of Christian teachings emphasized the inner, metaphysical meanings of biblical texts, urging students to see beyond the literal interpretations and view the scriptures are psychological instructions.

The Power Of The Imagination

Abdullah’s fundamental teaching was man’s divine power of the mind and imagination in shaping reality. He deeply influenced Neville Goddard’s teachings and helped countless New Thought teachers at the time explore the depths of their own spiritual potential. Abdullah’s distinctive approach to combining various mystical traditions offered a profound and nuanced spiritual education.. It is a well-known fact that the famous New Thought teacher Joseph Murphy and metaphysics author Walter C Lanyon spent years under his tutelage. Reading Murphy’s “The Power of Your Subconscious Mind” reveals remarkable parallels in his teachings on autosuggestion and the “state akin to sleep.” It’s clear that both he and Neville Goddard were influenced by the same guiding principles.

Ethiopian Roots

” he was black as the ace of spades, my old friend Abdullah with his turbaned head” Lesson 3  -Thinking Forth Dimensionally

Abdullah hailed from Ethiopia, bringing with him a rich tapestry of cultural heritage. Of Ethiopian Jewish descent, Abdullah’s unique background played a pivotal role in shaping his spiritual teachings. His early life in Africa exposed him to a variety of cultural and spiritual practices, which he seamlessly integrated into his own esoteric knowledge. This diverse cultural upbringing allowed Abdullah to blend elements of his Jewish heritage with the vibrant traditions of Ethiopia. When he moved to the United States, Abdullah carried this rich cultural legacy with him, deeply influencing his teachings and the spiritual journeys of his students. His ability to draw from such a wide array of traditions made his lessons profoundly impactful and universal, resonating with individuals from diverse backgrounds. Abdullah’s Ethiopian Jewish roots were thus a cornerstone of his spiritual wisdom, enriching the lives of all who studied under him.

Hebrew Proficiency

Hebrew Proficiency

” The bible is a revelation of eternal truth, this eternal truth is called in scripture Jesus Christ” Neville Goddard Amnesia, The Sleep Of Death

Born an Ethiopian Jew, he was fluent in Hebrew, a skill that played a pivotal role in his deep knowledge and interpretation of scriptures. Proficiency in Hebrew was not just a linguistic ability but a gateway to deep spiritual insights. If one is to transcend what is commonly called reason and logic, then we must gain a deeper understanding of hidden meanings in the bible. Words, thoughts, and ideas amount to nothing if their meaning cannot be understood, and Abdullah taught Neville Goddard how to “properly” read the Hebrew Bible, emphasizing the original language’s nuances and profound meanings. So much is lost when we try to interpret scripture literally, which is why churches today are often conflicted and confused when it comes to explaining certain biblical stories. Understanding the symbolic meanings, which are revealed when you understand the original language it was written in, emphasizes why proficiency in Hebrew is all the more important.

Neville Goddard, Joseph Murphy, and even current teachers like Reverend Ike really leaned on the Bible for their spiritual ideas. The deep wisdom and knowledge Abdullah shared with them were so important, especially since nuggets of deep wisdom can easily get lost in translation.

Goddard often delved into the Hebrew Bible, using its rich symbolic language to explain tricky spiritual concepts to his followers. So, Abdullah’s Hebrew expertise was key, connecting ancient wisdom with modern spiritual practice and heavily influencing Neville’s work and lasting impact. Abdullah’s language and spiritual guidance really helped shape Goddard’s unique take on self-help and metaphysical teachings.

Imagination as Reality

Abdullah instilled in his students a key concept that “Imagination was the only true reality”. He was a teacher who practiced what he preached. Time and time again, he would demonstrate this in his own life, that what we envision internally shapes our external reality. According to Abdullah, the outer world mirrors our inner consciousness, echoing ancient wisdom found in various spiritual traditions.” As within, so without.”

By harnessing the power of the imagination, individuals can mold their destinies, manifesting their deepest desires into tangible existence. Abdullah’s teachings transcend mere visualization as taught by many of today’s self-help gurus. His teachings delve into the true nature of reality and the essence of creation itself. He believed that every thought, fueled by imagination, possesses the potential to materialize, urging disciples to cultivate mindful awareness of their internal dialogue. We are essentially what we imagine ourselves to be. In his guidance, imagination ceases to be a mere fantasy; it becomes a potent force capable of sculpting the fabric of reality itself.

Any truth-seeker seeking to unlock their personal power and untap their creative abilities should explore the mystic’s teachings.

Law of Assumption

The mystic imparted a profound lesson known as the Law of Assumption. This principle, central to Neville’s teachings, emphasizes the power of assuming the feeling of the wish fulfilled to manifest desires. Abdullah believed that by embodying the emotional state of already having what one desires, effectively “living in the end,” the universe aligns to bring that desire into reality.

“and then he began to teach me this law, this principle by which you realize your dream by living in your dream ” Neville Goddard The Pure In Heart

This concept goes beyond mere visualization; it requires fully immersing oneself in the experience of already having achieved the desired outcome. Through Abdullah’s guidance, Neville learned to harness the Law of Assumption, understanding that the key to manifestation lies not only in thought but in deeply feeling the reality of one’s desires. This principle revolutionized Neville’s approach to manifestation and became a cornerstone of his teachings, inspiring countless individuals to transform their lives through the power of assumption.

Living Example

Great teachers not only talk the talk but walk the walk too. Abdullah epitomized the principle of being a “Living Example”; Beyond mere words, He embodied the truths he imparted, making his teachings profoundly impactful. His unwavering faith and conviction in the principles of manifestation and the power of imagination were evident in every aspect of his life.

So I tried to open up my discussion with Abdullah, and I said , “Ab, I did all that you told me . I clothed myself with Barbados, I am sleeping in Barbados, and yet here I am in New York City” He would not talk to me. He turned his back upon me the very first time I brought it up; he walked towards the studio and slammed the door in my face . And if you knew Abdullah as I knew him that was no invitation to come in” NEVILLE GODDARD ONE GREATER THAN JOHN

Abdullah’s daily actions resonated with the beliefs he instilled in his students. Whether it was demonstrating the Law of Assumption in his own life as illustrated in the excerpt above, or showcasing the transformative potential of imagination, Abdullah lived as a testament to the efficacy of his teachings. Through his authenticity and integrity, he would inspire those around him to embrace the principles of conscious creation and spiritual empowerment. Nearly a century later, his legacy continues to inspire seekers of truth to embody their beliefs and manifest their highest potentials. He was truly the embodiment of the divine imagination. Abdullah’s daily actions resonated with the beliefs he instilled in his students. Whether it was demonstrating the Law of Assumption in his own life or showcasing the transformative potential of imagination, Abdullah lived as a testament to the power of the human imagination.

Early 20th Century

Early 20th Century

Abdullah exemplified the law of assumption during a time when racial discrimination was rampant, well before the civil rights movement. One powerful example Neville often shared was how Abdullah would apologetically buy his own theatre ticket and sit center stage even though such spaces were typically reserved for white patrons. In a time of extreme racial inequality for all black people in the United States, Abdulla refused to allow the limitations imposed by society to define his experience. By assuming his rightful place, not just physically but mentally, he proved one could transcend external prejudices. It’s a true testament to the power of one’s consciousness that this little black Ethiopian man was able to thrive in such a time of racial tension and discrimination.

It’s also important to note that the 1930s coincided with a remarkable era of massive interest in metaphysical and New Thought philosophies across America. It’s as if the collective consciousness of the entire Western Hemisphere went through a massive shift. Whether it was due to the fact that nations were recovering from the recent world war or the economic upheaval caused by the depression, whatever it was, it’s clearly evident that the society at the time was seeking alternatives to the governments as a solution to their problems.

It’s no mere coincidence that Abdullah and Neville collaborated during this transformative period. The depression acted as a catalyst for the masses to seek and explore alternative spiritual solutions. Abdullah’s teachings offered profound insights. And the wisdom he imparted to Neville helped popularize the mystics in a period of time when society really needed it. It’s a lasting legacy that continues to inspire seekers of spiritual truth in the 21st century.

Abdullah truly embodied the truth that circumstances and obstacles have no power over an individual who lives as if their desire already exists. What a powerful lesson this would be today! So often we complain about handicaps, unfair disadvantages, or mistreatment due to color, race, gender, or some other circumstance. Yet here in the most trying of times, Abdullah demonstrated that all of this can be overcome when we apply the law of assumption.

Unconventional Classroom

He would often employ unconventional teaching methods that transcended traditional classroom settings. Instead of formal lectures or structured courses, Abdullah favored a more intimate approach to sharing knowledge. He avoided the confines of conventional education, opting instead for personal interactions and practical demonstrations to convey his teachings.

“Everyday, with my old friend Abdullah I would practice this art . At dinner he would ask me to look at a lampshade. He didn’t mean for me to see the lampshade – anyone can do that – but to focus my attention through it. Looking beyond it I would see living breathing human faces. Other times he would ask me to look at car, a house , a wall – not with my outer eyes but with my inner eye;” Neville Goddard Follow The Pattern

Through one-on-one conversations and practical exercises, Abdullah instilled profound wisdom in his students, encouraging them to explore the depths of their own consciousness. This hands-on approach not only facilitated a deeper understanding of spiritual principles but also fostered a strong bond between teacher and student. His belief was that students learn through experience. His unique classroom focused on personal connection, hands-on learning, and putting spiritual ideas into practice.

Legacy

Though Abdullah didn’t seek fame or write books, his teachings lived on, particularly through the works of Neville Goddard and Joseph Murphy. Neville frequently acknowledged Abdullah as the catalyst for his profound spiritual transformation and deep understanding of the Law of Assumption. Through Neville’s books, lectures, and teachings, and to a lesser extent the works of Joseph Murphy and Walter C Lanyon, Abdullah’s wisdom reached a wider audience, shaping the lives and beliefs of countless individuals. Abdullah’s influence, though subtle and behind the scenes, is immortalized in the hearts and minds of those touched by Neville’s teachings. His lasting impact demonstrates the profound influence of a single mentor’s guidance.
