Biblical Numbers Meaning: What 7, 40, 888 and 1,260 Reveal About You

Michael SutherlandAuthor29 Oct 2026 · 14 min read

The biblical numbers meaning I care about is not the one hidden in a prophecy chart or a calendar of the end times. It is the meaning a number carries when you stop treating it as a date and start treating it as a description of a state of mind. I came to that view slowly, and by a winding road.

Around the time of my awakening, in 2017 and 2018, the number 11:11 kept showing up for me. On clocks, on screens, on receipts, again and again. I will be honest with you: I do not claim to know what it meant, and I am not going to assign it a meaning now. I mention it because it taught me how easily a number can seize the attention, and how important it is to ask what a number is actually for. Numerology, I should add, was one of the  alleyways I wandered down in my search for the truth, long before I found the one principle I now live by.

Noah and his wife watch the forty days of rain from the window of the ark

So I do not read the numbers of scripture as a ledger of historical facts. The sages who composed these books chose number on purpose, because a number can hold a truth compactly, as a seed holds a tree. Our work is to unwrap what they folded inside, and what we find there describes us.

This is not an attack on anyone’s faith. I honour those who count these numbers literally, but the two readings are not equals: the literal count is the first rung of the ladder, and it gives way to the inner reading, as the elder serves the younger.

Biblical numbers meaning: symbols of states, not dates

Neville Goddard a mystic of thee 20th centuurry who we heavily reference here was asked once about the forty days and forty nights, and his answer opened with a principle that governs this whole subject:

“Well, you see, in the Bible, numbers have their symbolical meaning. They have multiple meanings. Forty is the 13th letter of the Hebrew alphabet. The letter is “MEM.” Its symbol is the womb of a woman, that which gives birth.” (Neville, in his lecture “Questions and Answers 1970 Lessons”)

A number points to a letter, the letter to an image, and the image to a state of consciousness. Neville applied this to Luke’s account of the seventy disciples sent out “two and two before his face into every city and place, whither he himself would come” (Luke 10:1, KJV):

“Luke does not speak of seventy individuals which were sent out, but the numerical value of the Hebrew letter ayin, whose symbolic value is the eye. This is not the outside eye, but the incurrent eye, which sees inward into the world of thought.” (Neville, in his lecture “The Secret Of Causation”)

A headcount becomes an instruction: what goes ahead of you into every city is your own inward eye, the faculty that sees in imagination before anything is seen outside.

The mystic Manly P. Hall, in The Secret Teachings of All Ages (1928), shows that the ancients read number in the same spirit. In his chapter on Pythagorean mathematics he writes that the numbers “are to the monad what the branches of the tree are to the seed of the tree.” Every number, in other words, unfolds from the One.

Sound, symbol and number: the three faces of every Hebrew letter

To read the biblical numbers well, you need something most of us were never taught in Sunday school. In ancient Hebrew a letter is never merely a letter. Each of the twenty-two letters carries three meanings at once. It has a sound, which the breath and voice give it. It has a symbol, a picture held within its very name. And it has a number, because Hebrew had no separate digits: the letters themselves did the counting. This, I believe, is where so much of the hidden meaning in scripture lies concealed, folded inside the words themselves, waiting for anyone willing to read slowly enough to find it.

This is no modern invention. The Sepher Yetzirah, the Book of Formation, is one of the oldest texts of Jewish mysticism, and Hall reproduces it in his chapter “The Qabbalah, the Secret Doctrine of Israel”. Its opening verse declares that God created the universe:

“by three Sepharim, namely, Numbers, Letters, and Sounds, which are in Him one and the same.”

Numbers, letters and sounds, and all three one and the same. Keep that phrase close, because it is the key to everything that follows.

The sound: creation is spoken

The Book of Formation treats the letters first as living sounds. God, it says, “established twenty-two basic letters, formed by the voice and impressed upon the air by the breath,” and set them to be uttered in five different places in the human mouth: the throat, the palate, the tongue, the teeth and the lips. In this vision creation is not assembled; it is spoken, exactly as Genesis tells it: “And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.” (Genesis 1:3, KJV).

Consider the very first letter, aleph. It has almost no sound of its own. Linguists describe it as a glottal stop, the slight catch of breath before a vowel is voiced. What follows is TrueCosmic’s reading: the letter that stands for the One, at the head of the whole alphabet, is heard as a silence. Before anything is said, there is the stillness of awareness itself.

The symbol: every letter is a picture

The name of each Hebrew letter is itself a word, and many of those words are pictures. Aleph is the ox; its shape is traced to an ancient glyph of an ox’s head. Bet is a house. Yod is a hand, ayin an eye, peh a mouth, and tav, the final letter, a mark or cross. So the alphabet is not only a set of sounds; it is a gallery of images, and a word built from those letters can be read as a small parable.

Neville read the Bible through exactly these pictures. Taking the sacred name, Jod He Vau He, letter by letter, he taught:

“The ancient story-tellers called the first letter JOD, the hand, or the absolute seed out of which the whole of creation will come.” (Neville, in his lecture “Lesson 1 Consciousness is the Only Reality”)

The He, he explained, is a window or eye; the Vau is a nail that binds things together; and the closing He is a second window. Read as a drama, the name of God becomes the very act of creation in you: the hand is your awareness of being, the first window is your imagination, the nail is the moment you feel yourself into what you desire, and the final window is the visible world bearing witness to it. Of the third letter he says plainly:

“The third letter, VAU, is your ability to feel you are that which you desire to be.”

The name of God, in other words, is a description of how God creates through you.

The number: every word has a value

Because the letters were also numerals, every word carried a total. Aleph is 1, bet 2, yod 10, mem 40, ayin 70, qoph 100 and tav 400. Hall shows the sum of the sacred name itself: Yod 10, He 5, Vau 6 and He 5, which together make 26. The art of reading meaning into these values is called gematria, a word that comes from the Greek for geometry, and the rabbis of the Talmud counted it among their accepted ways of interpreting scripture (Gematria).

One of the oldest examples sits in Genesis itself. When Abram goes to rescue Lot, “he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen” (Genesis 14:14, KJV). The rabbis noticed that 318 is the numerical value of the name of Abram’s servant Eliezer, and the Talmud (Nedarim 32a) reads the verse accordingly (Eliezer). A headcount turns out to be a name.

Neville applied this principle again and again. When Abram is told his seed shall be afflicted “four hundred years” (Genesis 15:13, KJV), Neville refuses to read a calendar:

“Four hundred is the numerical value of the last letter of the Hebrew alphabet, which is tav; and the symbolical value of that is a cross.” (Neville, in his lecture “Test Him And See”)

The cross, he said, is the human body you wear, and the four hundred years last as long as you wear it. In the same way, when Peter asks how often he must forgive and is told “Until seventy times seven” (Matthew 18:22, KJV), Neville turns the arithmetic into an instruction:

“Seventy is the numerical value of the Hebrew letter ayin, whose symbol is an eye. Seven is the numerical value of the Hebrew letter zayin, whose symbol is a sword.” (Neville, in his lecture “Christ is Your Life”)

And he draws the lesson in the very next breath: “Here we are being told to imagine until the eye is fixed as though nailed with a sword.” Not four hundred and ninety acts of tolerance, but one inner gaze held steady until it is settled.

Where the three meet: meanings concealed in words

When sound, symbol and number are read together, single words open like sealed boxes. Take emet, the Hebrew word for truth. It is spelled aleph, mem, tav: the first letter of the alphabet, the middle letter and the last. The Talmud (Shabbat 55a) teaches that the seal of God is truth, and the sages saw in its spelling a truth that holds from beginning to end (Aish). Now remove the aleph, the One, and what remains is met, which means dead. Remove the aleph from adam, man, and what remains is dam, which means blood (Kabbalah Online).

Here is TrueCosmic’s reading of that hidden lesson. Take the awareness of I AM out of truth, and truth becomes a dead letter. Take it out of man, and nothing is left but flesh and blood. Paul put the same insight in one line: “for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.” (2 Corinthians 3:6, KJV).

Even the smallest mark carries weight. The Jesus of scripture says that “one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled” (Matthew 5:18, KJV). The jot is the yod, the smallest letter in the Hebrew alphabet. It is the hand, it is the number ten, and it is the first letter of the name of God. The tiniest stroke on the page holds the creative power that begins everything.

This is why I say the literal reading is only the first rung. On the surface, a number in scripture is a count of days, years or men. Read with its sound, its symbol and its value, it becomes a letter, the letter becomes a picture, and the picture turns out to be a portrait of you.

The meaning of seven: the work is finished

Seven enters scripture on the very first pages:

“And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.” (Genesis 2:2, KJV)

Neville read it as the signature of completion:

“All numbers have significance, and seven is spiritual perfection, because on the seventh day he finished; he rested, satisfied with all that was done. The eighth is a new beginning, the resurrection.” (Neville, in his lecture “The Man Within”)

Notice what God does on the seventh day. Nothing. He rests, satisfied, because the work is done. That is the whole posture of the Law of Assumption in one verse: you do not labour to make something happen; you rest in the conviction that it already has. Seven is the state of the finished work.

The meaning of forty: the womb of a new birth

Forty appears at nearly every turning point of the Bible. “And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights” (Genesis 7:12, KJV). Before his ministry begins, the Jesus of scripture goes into the wilderness, “And when he had fasted forty days and forty nights, he was afterward an hungred.” (Matthew 4:2, KJV). Goliath taunts Israel for forty days, which I explore in the inner meaning of David and Goliath.

If forty is mem, and mem is the womb, as Neville taught, then every forty in scripture is a gestation. It is the period in which something new is being formed out of sight. The flood, the wilderness and the fast are not punishments measured in days. They are pregnancies. So when your own season of testing feels endless, it may simply be the womb doing its work.

The 888 meaning in the Bible

A great deal is written about 888 that cannot be supported, so let me be precise. The number 888 does not appear anywhere in the text of the Bible. It comes from Greek gematria, the same practice of giving each letter a number that we met in Hebrew above. The Greek form of the name Jesus, Iesous, adds up to 888: iota 10, eta 8, sigma 200, omicron 70, upsilon 400 and sigma 200. The biblical studies blog Psephizo sets this out.

Neville did not, as far as the transcripts on our site show, speak of 888. But he spoke often of eight:

“It was on the eighth day (the first day of the new week) that Christ rose; therefore, eight is always associated with resurrection, regeneration, and the number of the Lord.” (Neville, in his lecture “Be Imitators of God”)

What follows is TrueCosmic’s own reading. If seven is the finished work, eight is what rises out of it. Eight repeated three times is resurrection carried through spirit, mind and body: a portrait of the risen state. And the name it spells is, in the inner reading, not a man in the sky but your own I AM.

1,260 days: the length of the inner drama

The Book of Revelation speaks of a woman who “fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days.” (Revelation 12:6, KJV). Many have built end of the world timetables on it. Neville placed it within the individual:

“count the days and you will discover there are 1260 days between the first vision and the last, as you inherit God.” (Neville, in his lecture “Christ is Your Life”)

For ancient mystics, 1,260 days was the span of the mystical experiences he described unfolding in a person. The same number connects with the serpent coiled three and a half times at the base of the spine, which I write about in Kundalini Spirit versus Holy Spirit. Either way, the movement is away from the calendar and toward the life within you.

What about the numbers that follow you?

This brings me back to 11:11. I understand the fascination with repeating numbers, because I have lived it. But Hall offers a caution worth hearing:

“The original Pythagorean system of numerical philosophy contains nothing to justify the practice now in vogue of changing the given name or surname in the hope of improving the temperament or financial condition by altering the name vibrations.”

The ancient study of number was never about outside signs steering your life. In my reading, the most useful thing any number can do is turn your attention back to the One, your own awareness of being. Scripture has a prayer for exactly this: “So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.” (Psalm 90:12, KJV).

How to apply the biblical numbers

  1. Find your forty. Name the season that feels like waiting or testing, and call it gestation instead of delay.
  2. Choose your seventh day. Decide the end you want, then ask what it would feel like to rest, satisfied, because it is finished.
  3. Use your inward eye. Like the seventy sent ahead, let your imagination go before you and see the situation resolved in the world of thought first.
  4. Leave the route to the eighth day. The biggest mistake is deciding not only what you want but exactly how it must arrive. Settle the end and leave the way open.
  5. Enter the scene each night. In the drowsy state before sleep, enter one short scene that implies your wish fulfilled, feel it as done, and fall asleep there.

If you are new to the principle behind these steps, start with our guide to the Law of Assumption.

Remember that this is a practice, not a trick. A stonemason does not raise a cathedral by striking one inspired blow. He measures, cuts and sets each block, day after day, and some stones crack under the chisel before he learns the grain. But stone by patient stone, the walls rise. Your inner life is built the same way, through faithful, repeated return.

A craftsman shapes stone before a door opening onto light, a symbol of the code that unlocks a door within

A code that unlocks a door within

Picture a door set deep in a wall, fitted with an old combination lock. For years you have walked past it, assuming it was only decoration. Then someone shows you that the numbers were never random, because every number is a letter and every letter a picture. Seven, forty, eight, the inward eye of seventy: each one is a turn of the dial. The combination was written for you, the door opens inward, and the one who opens it is your own I AM.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the biblical meaning of the number 7?

Seven marks completion. Genesis 2:2 says that on the seventh day God ended his work and rested. Neville called seven “spiritual perfection”, the state of the finished work, which is exactly the feeling you assume when you imagine your wish already fulfilled.

Is 888 mentioned in the Bible?

No, the number 888 does not appear in the biblical text. It comes from Greek gematria, in which the letters of Iesous, the Greek form of the name Jesus, add up to 888. Neville linked the number eight with resurrection and regeneration; reading 888 as the risen state is TrueCosmic’s own interpretation.

Why does the number 40 appear so often in scripture?

Forty marks the great turning points: forty days of rain, forty days on the mountain, forty years in the wilderness, a forty-day fast. Neville taught that forty is the value of the Hebrew letter mem, whose symbol is the womb, so each forty is a period of gestation in which something new is being born.

Is it heresy to read the numbers in the Bible symbolically?

Not at all; Philo of Alexandria, writing in the first century, read the numbers of scripture symbolically and saw in them truths about the soul. The literal count is where we begin, but it gives way to the inner meaning. When you realise the numbers describe your own states of consciousness, that realisation becomes the catalyst for real transformation.

What does 1,260 days mean in Revelation?

Revelation 12:6 says the woman is fed in the wilderness “a thousand two hundred and threescore days.” Neville taught that 1,260 days is the span between the first and last of the mystical experiences he described unfolding within a person. In this reading it is not an end-times countdown but the timing of an inner awakening.

Conclusion: the biblical numbers meaning is written in you

The biblical numbers meaning is not a puzzle about history or a forecast of catastrophe. It is concealed in the letters themselves, in their sound, their symbol and their value. Seven is the finished work, forty is the womb, eight is the rising, and 1,260 days is the length of the drama that unfolds within. Every number branches from the One, and the One is your own awareness of being.

So whatever you are counting down to, the answer is not out there in the numbers. It is already within you, together with the very power that set the stars in their courses. That power is yours to command, and you are the one who must turn the dial. Once you do, no delay and no calculation of the odds can keep that door shut. Fear not.
