What Is the Ark of the Covenant? The Hidden Temple Within You

Michael SutherlandAuthor29 Oct 2026 · 11 min read

What is the Ark of the Covenant? I first met it as a young child, reading Bible stories with my Jehovah’s Witness mentor: a gilded chest, carried on poles, so holy that it could not be touched. The external narrative was only reinforced when I watched Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark, where the Ark became a lost artefact to be hunted across deserts and fought over by armies.

For years that was the whole of it for me: a box, somewhere out there, perhaps buried, perhaps destroyed, certainly far away. It took an awakening for me to see that the Ark had never been far away at all.

Moses watches as craftsmen overlay the Ark of the Covenant with gold in the wilderness

I no longer read the Ark as an object that once existed and was later mislaid. I read it as part of a story that carries meaning, and I believe the sages who wrote it chose story deliberately, because what is placed in a story cannot be stolen, buried or melted down. Our part is to unwrap it. What we find inside is a description of ourselves, and of a presence within us that has been waiting, quietly, to be recognised.

I write for those who still hold the Bible as sacred but have grown weary of how it was taught to them, or of the hypocrisy they have seen in religious institutions. This is not an attack on anyone’s faith. I honour those who read the Ark as a literal chest of acacia and gold, but the readings are not equals: the literal is the first rung, and it gives way to the inner reading, as the elder serves the younger.

What is the Ark of the Covenant in the Bible?

The instructions are given to Moses in the wilderness:

“And they shall make an ark of shittim wood: two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a half the height thereof.” (Exodus 25:10, KJV)

It is overlaid with gold, fitted with rings and staves for carrying, and covered by a lid of pure gold called the mercy seat, with two cherubim facing one another above it. Into the chest goes the heart of the covenant: “And thou shalt put into the ark the testimony which I shall give thee.” (Exodus 25:16, KJV). The testimony is the tables of the law.

And then comes the promise that makes the Ark more than a container:

“And there I will meet with thee, and I will commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims” (Exodus 25:22, KJV)

In the story the Ark travels with Israel through the wilderness, goes before them into the promised land, and is finally brought into the innermost room of Solomon’s temple, the Holy of Holies. Scripture is careful to tell us what was in it then: “There was nothing in the ark save the two tables of stone, which Moses put there at Horeb” (1 Kings 8:9, KJV).

After that, the Ark quietly leaves the record. The Bible never describes its fate. And the prophet Jeremiah, strikingly, foresees a time when no one will even look for it:

“they shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither shall it come to mind” (Jeremiah 3:16, KJV)

Why would the most sacred object in Israel simply stop mattering? Jeremiah himself gives the answer a few chapters later, and it is the key to the whole inner reading.

The law written within

Speaking of the new covenant, Jeremiah writes:

“I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts” (Jeremiah 31:33, KJV)

The Ark held the law on tables of stone. The new covenant writes the same law within. Once the law is inside you, the chest is no longer needed, because you have become what it symbolised. That is why the Ark can pass out of mind without loss. It was never meant to be kept in a museum or found in a desert. It was always pointing at the human being.

I should say plainly that Neville Goddard, as far as the transcripts on our site show, did not teach on the Ark of the Covenant itself. What follows is TrueCosmic’s own reading, drawing on scripture, on the ancient mystery tradition, and on Neville’s broader teaching about who God is.

Paul put the principle in a single question: “Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?” (1 Corinthians 3:16, KJV). If you are the temple, the Holy of Holies is somewhere in you, and so is the Ark.

The mystic Manly P. Hall, in The Secret Teachings of All Ages (1928), reads the tabernacle in exactly this way, as a map of the body. He places the altar of incense at the throat, between “the Holy Place, which is the trunk of his body, and the Holy of Holies, which is the head with its contents.” And the Holy of Holies is the room where the Ark stood. In the inner reading, the meeting place between the cherubim is within your own head, in the mind itself.

The only real temple

When I ask myself where God’s presence sits in me, my answer is this: in the only real temple, the one referenced in Kings, which you ascend by a winding staircase. That staircase represents the serpent rising up the spine into the skull, into the mind.

Look at how scripture describes the building of Solomon’s temple:

“And the house, when it was in building, was built of stone made ready before it was brought thither: so that there was neither hammer nor axe nor any tool of iron heard in the house, while it was in building.” (1 Kings 6:7, KJV)

And the very next verse:

“The door for the middle chamber was in the right side of the house: and they went up with winding stairs into the middle chamber, and out of the middle into the third.” (1 Kings 6:8, KJV)

Notice that scripture teaches you ascend into the temple in silence. No hammer, no axe, no iron tool is heard. The instruction is given so covertly that most of us read straight past it: you rise in silent meditation. And the prophet confirms where that silence leads:

“But the LORD is in his holy temple: let all the earth keep silence before him.” (Habakkuk 2:20, KJV)

The Psalmist says the same in five words: “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10, KJV).

The New Testament speaks of this temple too. At the trial of the Jesus of scripture, witnesses claim to have heard him say he would build “another made without hands” (Mark 14:58, KJV), and Paul writes of “an house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens” (2 Corinthians 5:1, KJV). A temple no hand can build is a temple of consciousness.

The winding stair and the serpent

The winding stair is not a piece of architectural trivia. In the ancient traditions, a coiling path rising through the body describes the awakening of the spirit along the spine. Scripture has its own image for it: “And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up” (John 3:14, KJV). I explore this rising serpent more fully in Kundalini Spirit versus Holy Spirit.

Hall, writing about the Masonic legend of the temple builder, makes the connection openly. He says that “Sufficient similarity exists between the Masonic CHiram and the Kundalini of Hindu mysticism” to see the master builder as a symbol of the Spirit Fire, and then describes where that fire goes:

“when the Spirit Fire is lifted up through the thirty-three degrees, or segments of the spinal column, and enters into the domed chamber of the human skull, it finally passes into the pituitary body (Isis), where it invokes Ra (the pineal gland) and demands the Sacred Name.” (Manly P. Hall, “The Hiramic Legend”)

Up the winding stair, into the domed chamber of the skull, to the Sacred Name. In the language of the tabernacle, that domed chamber is the Holy of Holies, and the Ark sits within it.

If you have read my piece on Jacob’s ladder, you will recognise the pattern. Scripture keeps showing us a way up, and it always leads inward.

Who is the LORD in his temple?

“The LORD is in his holy temple.” The LORD, the I AM, is in his temple. And who is I AM? My very own awareness of being.

Neville put it with great clarity in his first book:

“Moses discovered God to be man’s awareness of being, when he declared these little understood words, ‘I AM hath sent me unto you.'” (Neville, At Your Command, Chapter One)

Here the whole symbol comes together. The Ark carries the law, and the law is now written within. The Ark stands in the Holy of Holies, and the Holy of Holies is the head with its contents. Above the mercy seat God promises, “there I will meet with thee.” And the God who meets you there is not a visitor from outside. It is the awareness that is reading these words right now, the I AM that you have always been.

You do not have to find the Ark. You are carrying it.

How to apply the Ark of the Covenant

  1. Write the law within. Decide on one desire and state it as a settled fact, the way the testimony was set in the Ark. Not a hope or a request, but a fact of your inner world.
  2. Build in silence. Like the temple raised without the sound of a hammer, keep your inner work quiet. Do not argue for it, announce it or test it against the noise of the world.
  3. Climb the winding stair. Sit still, let your attention withdraw from the body and the senses, and let it rise inward toward the mind, step by step, until the outer noise fades.
  4. Meet above the mercy seat. In that stillness, assume the end. Do not decide how it must come about. The biggest mistake is micromanaging the route; the Ark went before Israel, not behind them, and the way was opened for them.
  5. Enter the scene each night. In the drowsy state just before sleep, enter one short scene that would only happen if your wish were already fulfilled. Feel it as done, and fall asleep in it.

If you are new to the principle, our guide to the Law of Assumption sets it out step by step.

Remember that this is a practice, not a trick. A potter does not throw a perfect vessel the first time the wheel turns. The clay slumps, the walls collapse, and he scrapes it back and begins again. But he returns to the wheel day after day, and over time his hands learn to centre the clay almost without thought. The vessels that come from that patience can hold water for a lifetime. Your inner practice is shaped in the same way, by faithful return.

A lamp carried up a winding stair

Picture a narrow stone stair, winding upward in the dark. Someone is climbing it slowly, in silence, carrying a single lamp. At the foot of the stair the light seems small and the dark enormous. But with every turn the walls grow brighter, until at the top the lamp is set down in a quiet chamber, and the whole room is filled with its glow.

That is what unwrapping this story does. The Ark is not a lost treasure in some vault. It is the presence in you, and the stair is the way you rise to meet it. Every evening that you go up in silence, you carry the lamp a little higher, and a power that has lain dormant in you wakes to its own light.

Frequently Asked Questions

What was inside the Ark of the Covenant?

Exodus 25:16 says the testimony, the tables of the law, was placed in the Ark, and 1 Kings 8:9 says that by the time of Solomon’s temple there was nothing in it except the two tables of stone. Other passages speak of a pot of manna and Aaron’s rod being kept with it. In the inner reading, what the Ark carries is the law written within you.

Where is the Ark of the Covenant today?

The Bible never records what became of it, and its whereabouts are unknown. Jeremiah 3:16 foresees a day when people “shall say no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD”. TrueCosmic’s reading is that it was never meant to be found outside, because the law it held is now written in the heart.

Is it heresy to say the Ark of the Covenant is within you?

Reading scripture for its inner meaning is ancient; Philo of Alexandria interpreted the tabernacle and its furnishings as symbols of the cosmos and the soul. The literal chest is where the story begins, but that reading gives way to the inner one. Realising that the presence is in you, not in a box, is the very thing that sets transformation in motion.

What does the winding stair in Solomon’s temple mean?

1 Kings 6:8 says “they went up with winding stairs into the middle chamber, and out of the middle into the third.” In TrueCosmic’s reading, the stair is the path of awakening rising up the spine into the skull, and the silence of 1 Kings 6:7 tells you how to climb it: in still, quiet meditation.

Did Neville Goddard teach about the Ark of the Covenant?

As far as the transcripts on our site show, Neville did not teach on the Ark of the Covenant directly. The reading here is TrueCosmic’s own. It rests on Neville’s central teaching, though, that God is man’s awareness of being, the I AM.

Conclusion: what is the Ark of the Covenant to you?

What is the Ark of the Covenant? Not a relic lost in a desert or locked in a warehouse, but the presence of God carried within you, the law written in your inward parts, the meeting place above the mercy seat inside your own mind. You reach it the way the temple was built: in silence, up the winding stair.

So whatever stands in front of you today, do not go searching the world for the answer. It already rests within you, along with the same power that called the universe into being, and it waits on your word. You are the operant power. You must go up and meet it, and when you do, no army, no circumstance and no obstacle can stand against what you carry. Fear not.
